- alternatives to boilers, namely renewable heating systems (Solar, Geothermal Heat Pumps);

- solar passive heating and environmentally-friendly landscaping (if you aren’t just remodeling your house and replacing your boiler);

- home insulation (a good insulation will reduce the heating needs and the size of the boiler you need);

- the boiler's fuel (pellet wood boilers are a great alternative in cold climates, for large heating needs);

- the design and type of boiler: prefer a high efficient or condensing (combination) boiler or a pellet boiler;

- sizing and installation (it should be done by a professional)

- UL, Energy Star and other official certifications and qualifications.

- the boiler's AFUE (a measure of the efficiency of the boiler; the best boilers may reach an AFUE of 95% or more).

Manufacturers have several models, with different efficiencies and qualities. Take that into account. And also that the AFUE, or certifications and qualifications by official entities like UL, Energy Star may be more important than the brand and the manufacturer in themselves.

Choosing popular brands and manufacturers might be a clever choice, and choosing a large and well-know manufacturer is usually better than a small and unknown one. It’s not a guarantee of quality, but it might be a good starting point. We list below some of the most popular boiler manufacturers.

Some of them are also engaged in solar solutions. Obviously, that may be rather relative or rather circumstantial (such as the small list above).
