THE HOUSE ENERGY
EFFICIENCY IMPORTANCE
We all are
burning fossil fuels
The energy we use in our homes comes mainly from coal, oil, gas
and other fossil fuels. Un example: the electricity we use for
lighting or for running our home appliances comes from power
stations that burn fossil fuels.
Whenever we use energy for heating,
cooking, lighting or in home electrical appliances
we are
indirectly burning
fossil fuels.
Greenhouse effect
But burning fossil fuels releases gases into the Earth’s
atmosphere. Those gases were important, traditionally:
they form a protective layer that avoids heat from escaping into
outer space – the greenhouse effect – without which our planet
would be too cold to support most of its life (or its entire
life).
Climate change and global warming
The problem is that we are now adding too much CO2 and other
gases to the natural protective layer, turning earth’s high atmosphere too warm. In other words: we
are causing global warming and climate change, we are affecting
the planet’s weather systems. Climate change –
in its present patterns - is mainly a process caused by humans
and the energy we are consuming in our houses.
Homes are responsible for approximately
30% per cent of CO2
emissions.
That’s why home energy efficiency is crucial.
Reducing energy bills, and saving the planet
We all can contribute to save our planet, by reducing our energy bills. There are many small things and investments in our
homes that are important to reduce global warming and
climate change.
