gas fireplaces

Gas fireplaces (and gas fireplace inserts) use either natural gas or propane and are a clean and safe option - as long as properly vented... Recent technological improvements make them highly effective and able to replace traditional wood-burning fireplaces. Just avoid the non-vented gas units. Even the best are unsafe and unhealthy.

Uses and advantages

Gas fireplaces have a reasonable heat output, well above the common electric fireplaces and small electric heaters. That makes them a good solution for zone heating strategies or even for heating entire homes (namely in mild climates).

Their relatively low cost (typical prices range between $1,000 and $2,000), their reasonable heat output and their cleanliness and easy maintenance are significant advantages.

The venting and the health issue

Gas fireplaces must be vented outside the home to reduce or eliminate the emission of CO, nitrogen oxide and other pollutants.

Some manufacturers and interests claim that unvented units have no risk, but the American Lung Association and other organizations state otherwise and warn to the unhealthy side of gas- and wood-combustion units without proper outdoor venting. See: B-Venting vs. Direct Venting

Gas fireplace from LennoxGas fireplaces vs. Gas Stoves

There isn’t a significant difference between gas fireplaces and gas stoves. Gas fireplace inserts are basically gas stoves converted to fit within an existing firebox of a masonry fireplace. Common gas fireplaces share the same technological elements of gas stoves...

Environmental impact

Natural gas fireplaces or stoves aren't exactly green units; gas isn't the smart form of energy that gas associations claim. But natural gas is a relatively clean and affordable form of energy, much cleaner than other fossil sources (cleaner than electricity, since most of the electricity we use comes from carbon and other fossil fuels).

Alternatives to gas fireplaces

Gas fireplaces, with their new technology, can be a very effective option. But there are other direct alternatives, eventually more effective for some needs, goals and climates… An example: electric fireplaces can be a better solution for small uses and occasional needs, or for mainly decorative purposes...
