best stove and fireplace companies

Ranking stove and fireplace companies is a very difficult and rather impossible task. Even the best manufacturers may have medium and poor-quality units, their reputation can result from models they sold some years or decades ago, and their number is very high and they have a very diverse offer....

The list of companies we show in this page is not an endorsement one. It’s just a small list (with lapses) of some of the best and most reputable companies...

Stoves vs. fireplace companies

There isn't a true dividing line between stoves and fireplaces. The new technology has blurred it... New fireplaces (inserts) use the stove technology, and there aren't significant differences between wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts, or between gas and pellet units. The manufacturers are, for this reason, often the same.

Some of the bigger and best stove and fireplace companies have a wide offer. Many of them offer wood, gas and pellet stoves and fireplaces; but there are others with a limited offer, and the number of those selling electric units is very small.

Choice criteria

If shopping for a wood fireplace pay attention to the EPA list of the cleaner and best wood fireplaces and companies: EPA Cleaner fireplaces. In USA and Canada qualified wood fireplaces have a white tag.

In USA or Canada it’s easy to get qualified wood stoves: they also have an EPA white label.

To compare wood stoves look for their certification and pay close attention to their emission; a lower grams/hour rating means a cleaner and more efficient unit. For a list of qualified wood stoves and wood stove manufacturers, see:  EPA-certified wood stoves (PDF)

Look also for the safety labels of testing and certification bodies like UL and ULC, or the emissions standards of the state of Washington for stoves and fireplaces (they are very strict).

Consumer Reports lists

Amazon.com is selling electric fireplaces and stoves as well as gas logs and gel fireplaces, with dozens of customer reviews. To take a look at them, see: Gel Fireplaces, Electric fireplaces and Gas Logs

The ConsumerSearch.com organization has some reports with the “best“ wood, corn, multi-fuel and budget pellet stoves. The reports have some years, but you may want to take a look at them here (the page has other links to related reports).
