stone tile, advantages, disadvantages & maintenance
Stone isn’t necessarily an expensive and luxurious material. On average stone is more expensive than ceramic tile and other flooring options, but... there are many stones, involving different prices, properties and... maintenance.
Stone types
There are many types of natural stone and stone tiles for floor covering, available in a wide variety of colors and finishes: polished, chiseled, honed, brushed, cleft, tumbled, flamed…
Take into account a basic fact concerning stone tile: even the same type of stone may differ a lot in terms of quality.

Stone uses
Stone can be used in most rooms, even in bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms where moisture is common. Be careful, in these cases: choose a water-resistant stone and apply a proper sealant.
Stone advantages
Stones can be resurfaced and have a long lifespan. With its natural beauty, stone will increase the value of your house and is an easy-to-clean and a relatively environmentally-friendly option (see: Tiles and environment).
Stone disadvantages
Some stones are expensive, and – like others tile floors - may also be cold and hard underfoot (softer stones are prone to strains, moisture and scratches).
Environmentally, some stones demand huge mining works, and also disarrangements on the earth’s surface and a lot of energy to quarry, etc. Besides, it isn’t a renewable resource (we can’t make more stone…).
Stones & Stains
Stones are porous materials, though in different degrees. To prevent staining, stones should be properly sealed: proper sealing and maintenance are crucial.
Maintenance
Stone requires simple maintenance, except for the occasional use of impregnating sealers and stone care products.
Stone Resurfacing
Stone can be resurfaced, in order to extend its lifespan. That’s one of the advantages of the stone, relatively to other alternatives.
