and Fiberglass Garage Doors
Most garage doors are either wood, steel or aluminum doors. But
fiberglass and vinyl garage doors are also relatively
common….
Vinyl
garage doors
Vinyl is environmentally a very wrong choice,
and
when applied to garage doors, namely to the larger ones, vinyl
is undoubtedly also a bad option.
In climates with cold winters and hot
summers, most vinyl garage doors have a low performance. There
are many reported problems and complaints with vinyl garage
doors. Warping problems are common, mainly in double car
garages.
Besides, vinyl garage doors may become noisy
and fragile when subject to persistent low temperatures, which
make them a bad option in cold climates.
Fiberglass Garage Doors
Fiberglass doors are commonly aluminum frames
with fiberglass panels.
Fiberglass garage doors are cheaper than
steel doors, and also lighter - an advantage for those who don’t
have an automatic garage door opener.
Fiberglass quality
Fiberglass quality varies a lot. Fiberglass
can be dent resistance, but most fiberglass isn’t. Be aware.
Cons of fiberglass garage doors
- though fiberglass is a common insulator,
it’s performance is much lower than that of other materials,
namely polyurethane – commonly used in steel insulated garage
doors.
- fiberglass tend do weather with age, which
turn fiberglass garage doors very susceptible to break,
especially in cold climates.
Alternatives to fiberglass and vinyl garage doors
In most cases, a two steel panel door
insulated with polyurethane is the best option on garage doors.
