Wood Garage Doors

Wood garage doors are often preferred for its natural look and for reasons based on tradition.

Types of Wood Garage Doors

Tilt-up wood garage doors are the most common of wood garage doors. The most affordable of these type of doors are based on firs and other softwoods, covered by an exterior plywood.

Doors made of solid pieces of cedar, redwood and other hardwoods are between the best and most expensive.

Sectioned wood garage doors are less popular due to their weight (good solid wood doors are heavier), maintenance costs and to cracking and trimming problems.

Cons of wood garage doors

- Common wood garage doors can easily crack and trim;
- Wood garage doors demand regular repainting and maintenance;
- Most wood garage doors have a very short warranty;
- The energy efficiency of wood garage doors is moderate or low;
- Many wood doors are primed and unfinished, demanding to be finished and painted upon installation.

Wood garage doors and insulation

Wood provides some natural insulation, but it is lower or much lower than that of steel or aluminum insulated doors.

Alternatives to wood garage doors

Unless you are an unconditional adept of wood, equate the possibility of a good two steel panel door insulated with polyurethane. That's the best option in most cases.
