wood garage doors
Wood garage doors are offered in a large variety of styles and continue to appeal to those that love the traditional and natural style and warmth of the wood. But wood garage doors can be much more expensive and demand more maintenance and care than most other garage doors.
Low-cost wood doors
The lowest-cost option in the wood line doors is painted wood with flat hardboard panels. Stain-grade solid wood doors cost much more.
Types of Wood Garage Doors
Tilt-up wood garage doors are the most common type of wood garage doors. The most affordable of these type of doors use firs and other softwoods, covered by an exterior plywood.
Doors made of solid pieces of cedar and redwood (or other hardwoods) are between the best and most expensive.
Sectioned wood garage doors are uncommon due to weight reasons (good solid wood doors are very heavy), maintenance costs and to cracking and trimming problems.
Wood Composite
Wood composite garage doors are very strong doors, made with recycled wood fibers; they resist better to splitting and trimming than solid wood doors. And they have the look and texture of wood.
The disadvantage is that they have less energy-efficiency than well insulated steel and aluminum doors, and demand almost the same regular maintenance and care of the ordinary garage wood doors.
Cons of wood garage doors
Wood garage doors are no more a popular choice, due to the regular repainting and maintenance demanded by them, and also because of their lower or moderate energy-efficiency.
Besides that, low-quality wood doors (the cheaper ones) may also easily crack and trim and have short warranties.
In some cases, wood doors are sold primed and unfinished (demanding to be finished and painted upon installation), which may also be a disadvantage.
Wood garage doors and insulation
Wood provides some natural insulation, better than that of steel. But... that doesn't mean much. Well insulated steel or aluminum doors provide much better insulation values (R-value) than wood doors.
Alternatives to wood garage doors
Even if you are a fan of wood, consider the possibility of a good two-layer steel door with polyurethane insulation. That's a cheaper and more energy efficient solution, with many designs and colors to respond to your aims - including wood look...
