Lighting dimmer switches
Modern light switches can be rather different from traditional ones.
Types of switches
There are now several types of light switches on the market, all involving a very small investment.
Besides the traditional standard toggle switches, there are now more sophisticated switches associated to motion sensors, timers and, mainly, dimmer switches (for general and work lighting, and also for portable lamps). Dimmer switches are the most interesting for energy savings and to create special moods…

The traditional toggle light switches offer functionality, ease of use and very low prices. They can be used for controlling one light from two locations (three-way switches), which is obviously very convenient in many cases. New switches, though slightly expensive, are more versatile. Dimmer switches can brighten or dim the lighting – just by moving a control up or down, or by turning a knob, or some similar mechanism –, making possible significant energy savings: dimming the lights 50% can save around 40% electricity, besides extending the bulb life and setting the right light for the moment (reading, entertaining, having dinner…)
Dimmer switches for portable lamps
Dimmer switches for floor and table lamps couldn't be easier to install. Simply plug the lamp into the dimmer and then plug the dimmer into the outlet….
Using them is also extremely easy. You just have to select your light level with the slider (or knob…), and move it up or down to increase or to decrease the amount of light.
These switches often have their own cord. Just be aware to the type of bubbles they work with. For energy savings, choose switches for fluorescent or LED bulbs.
Wall switch dimmers
Wall switch dimmers are the best way to set the right light for any activity (having dinner, reading, TV watching, waking up in the night to soft light, rather than to lights turned full on …) with energy savings.
The most typical switches of this type involve a large on/off switch and buttons to fine-tune the light levels.
Wall switch dimmers and controllers
Some wall dimmer switches have separate controllers, allowing people to command the switch even from contiguous rooms. They can be placed wherever wireless control of lights is desired.
For a better energy-efficiency, prefer switch dimmers for fluorescent or LED bulbs…
Location of the switches
Do not forget some basic rules when considering the installation of switches, namely if you are not planning to have a whole-house lighting system, controllers and wireless ligthing.
A common and rather obvious rule in such cases is to install switches in more than just one location - if the area involves more than just one entrance... An example: a switch at each end of a hallway. It’s more than just convenience: it’s also a necessity, and will make leaving the light on less likely.
Another rather similar and obvious rule is to have separate switches in rooms with several kinds of lights (overhead kitchen lights and kitchen counter lights, for example). That’s important for energy savings.
