wall washing lighting
Wall washing lighting is a specific type of indirect lighting, and a way to get an even and glare-free illumination.
Types of wall washing lighting
Wall washing is usually obtained by placing light fixtures on the ceiling (or floor) at regular intervals, projecting to the wall.
Fixtures should be located at a suitable distance from each other and also from the wall. Some overlapping of light can be advantageous to avoid dark spots and to get a more even distribution of light.
In some simpler solutions wall washing is obtained by placing a sconce or other light fixture projecting to a wall.
Advantages
The wall washing technique can produce an even and glare-free illumination, adding comfort to homes. It can also make the room appear brighter and more spacious.
This design technique can also wash out shadows associated to imperfections on walls.
Light fixturesÂ
In most cases, wall-washing lighting uses track lighting and ceiling-mounted fixtures.
Recessed directional down-lights and sconces – using compact fluorescent, LEDs or low-voltage halogen lights - are excellent to get energy-efficiency and good illumination.
