2 and 4 stroke Gas Hedge trimmers
Gas powered hedge trimmers with their large cutting swath (16-18 inches) are designed for big-sized yards. They are powerful units, but they aren't economical for small and average yards, or energy-efficient.
If you do need a gasoline powered hedge trimmer, prefer a 4 stroke engine unit or a 2-stroke engine unit with a commercial-grade air-filtration system. They cost a little more but you will get less noise, clean-air standards and energy savings.
Gas Hedge Trimmers Disadvantages
New gas powered trimmers (namely the 4-stroke units) are less energy guzzling than older units, but they remain an energy inefficient option.
Even the best gas units are polluting, noisy and more difficult to use (they vibrate a lot more) than electric models. They also require more maintenance, and are more expensive.
If you have a small or an average-size yard, they aren't an economical or an environmental choice.
Prices
Gas (and propane) hedge trimmers are significantly more expensive than electric trimmers. Prices between $100 and $300 are common. See for prices and customer reviews at Amazon.com: Gas Hedge Trimmers.
4- and 2-stroke hedge trimmer models
As mentioned earlier, 4-stroke gas hedge trimmers are more environmentally-friendly, and produce less noise and are more energy efficient (they demand lower fuel consumption) than typical 2-stroke trimmers. But they are also more expensive. See for prices and customer reviews at Amazon.com: Gas Hedge Trimmers.
