hedge and grass trimming shears
Traditional grass and hedge shears have fallen out of favor with many homeowners, but they may well be the best option for smaller trimming jobs.
Using manual shears isn't necessarily a hard task. On the contrary. They are quieter and better for the environment than electric or gas trimmers, which are overkill for small jobs. Short and long-handled hedge or grass shears can be very effective and ultimately the most energy-efficient option.
Anyway, either for hedge, grass or other type of garden task, selecting the right brand and model can make a great difference...
Hedge Shears
Fiskars hi-tech shears, made from modern lightweight materials, are often rated as a Best Buy. They are well balanced and are among the least tiring. But there are other high rated shears from other manufacturers (Wolf Garten, Felco, Yeoman, etc.). See, for customer reviews (Amazon.com): Hand Shears
Grass shears
Common hand grass shears work fine for small trimming jobs. There is even long neck grass shears, operated in an upright position. With them you will not need to bend down. Long neck grass shears let homeowners walk around, cutting the grass without bending over and stooping, and can reach places hard to reach and cut long grass around shrubs.
The head of the most well known model (from Fiskars) rotates 180 degrees, to get the desired trimming angle, and is a relatively cheap product (around $30 - $35). Obviously, they have limitations, and aren't aimed for heavy or laarge garden tasks...
ARS, Corona and Fiskars are well known brands for grass and hedge trimming shears. But there are many others. See for customer reviews on grass shears (Amazon.com): Grass Shears
Electric shears
Electric shears can also be a handy and useful trimmer in small garden tasks. See, for customer reviews: Electric Grass Shears
