Prices and Costs of Radiant (Floor) Heating

Prices & types of radiant systems

Radiant heating prices differ largely. Prices vary with the size of the project, the type and quality of equipment, and also with the type of system.

The several radiant heating systems

1- Hydronic / liquid floor heating;
2- Electric floor heating;
Radiant Panel Heating

have very different initial and running costs.

The initial investment on a Radiant electric floor or on a Radiant Panel for a single room is much lower than the cost of a Hydronic Radiant Heating system for that same room…

On the other hand, a Hydronic Radiant Heating system may have lower operative costs but it demands a much higher initial investment. Only in larger projects, involving the whole house, Hydronic Radiant Heating is more cost-effective (and offers significantly lower running costs).

Running costs of radiant heating

Running costs depend mainly on the energy source of the radiant system.

Hydronic Radiant Heating systems with their boilers connected to a solar system or a ground heat pump have very low running costs. But since most Radiant Panels and most Radiant Electric systems are connected to conventional electric sources, their operative costs are much higher.

Radiant electric floor prices

The installation of a radiant electric floor system in a small room like a bathroom or a kitchen (the main use of radiant electric floor systems) is relatively low: about $500 - $800 to an average-size bathroom.

Radiant panel prices

Most radiant panels range in price from $200 to $500. The price of the thermostat connected to each panel is approximately $40-$50.

Hydronic radiant floor heating prices

Sophisticated radiant-floor heating systems are expensive, though prices vary significantly with the size of the house and quality of equipment.

Costs ranging from $3 to $10 per square foot are very common. Systems able to heat a 2,500-square-foot home may cost about $5,000…

This is, obviously, just a reference. Costs may indeed vary a lot, and the size and the type of installation counts a lot: projects of about 2000 square feet with sophisticated controls and high efficiency boiler, may run to about $ 4-6  per square feet in the case of “wet” installation or $5-7 in the case of “dry” installations. But smaller projects will have an average higher price, while larger projects will have a lower one.
