Window Awnings, Solar screens, Shades, Shutters, Window Films and Blinds

Devices as awnings, window films, solar screens, shades and blinds are important elements to shade and cooling a house and to reduce air conditioning costs.

Awnings

There is now a complete line of retractable and fixed awnings for decks, patios, terraces, windows and doorways. And these devices can easily pay for themselves through energy savings.

Basics on awnings

Window Films/Tints

Solar films (also known as window films or window tints) are a proven low-cost method for reducing cooling bills.  Typically, window films are attached to the interior of existing windows, skylights or glass doors.

Solar Screens

Exterior mounted solar screens also stop the sun’s radiation before it enters home, reducing sun glare and UV rays. Exterior mounted solar screens may indeed be very effective and decrease inside temperatures by some degrees.

Modern retractable solar screens - with their many colours, including custom painted... - may harmoniously blend to your house’s exterior. And they may be stored in protective casements when not in use and do not reduce outdoor vision.

Just choose the right manufacturer and dealer. They offer very different options and written warranties.

Shades, Blinds and Shutters

Shades, blinds and shutters offer beauty and light control… They allow less glare and important UV protection, but sometimes aren't very effective as cooling devices.

Yet you should consider them, mainly those installed exteriorly. These ones may effectively reduce heat transfer from outdoors, adding comfort and reducing AC bills.

Internal shade devices as blinds and curtains aren’t as effective as external ones. They do not prevent heat that passes through the windows’ glass. To get the best performance from curtains and blinds make them opaque, of light colour or with reflective properties.

Choose carefully. There are many options. And don't forget: external devices should be designed to allow shade in summer but not in winter. To achieve it, fixed devices should take into account the height of the window and the angles of the sun.
