Flat solar Panels
Flat solar panels are the most used type of panels worldwide, and can be glazed or unglazed. Freezing conditions reduce the efficiency of this panels in colder climates.
Liquid flat solar Panels
Common flat-plate panels use a liquid (water, glycol…) as the heating fluid. They comprise a net of flow tubes (where water or another heating fluid flows), a dark color absorber plate (to absorb the sunlight heat) and a glazing surface. They also comprise an inlet and an outlet connection. The image below shows how these elements are integrated.

Air flat solar Panels
Air flat panels are much less common than liquid ones. As the name suggests, they use air as the heating medium, instead of water or other liquid fluid. Their absorber plates are often metal sheets or layers of screen.
However, since air is a bad conductor, there is less heat generation and less efficiency. Air flat solar panels are mainly used in air-space heating solutions, whenever a liquid pipe system isn’t available or isn’t cheap enough to install and run.
unglazed Flat Solar Collectors
In addition to common glazed flat solar panels there are also unglazed flat panels.
Unglazed flat solar panels are cheaper but generate lower water temperatures, making them inadequate for many solar heating applications.
They are mainly used in swimming pool heating and in simple space heating solutions and moderate climates where temperatures do not need to be high.

New features in modern flat Solar Panels
The flat solar panel technology is rather standard and with some decades. There are however some modern features that are important to consider: they are lighter and more durable and weather resistant in their framing than previous versions; better interior fiberglass insulation and a wider heat exposure also render them more efficient.
Flat Solar Panels Prices
The main advantage of flat solar panels over tube solar is the price. Flat solar panels are a cheaper solution, despite the ever-lower prices of tube solar panels.
Climate & flat solar Panels
Flat solar panels are mostly used in warm and mild climates and - in the case of unglazed flat solar panels – in pool water heating and other less demanding applications.
Not all flat solar panels are made equal, and some good flat collectors can perform reasonably even in colder climates, but well manufactured tube solar panels are a better solution in such cases.
