Solar Power Incentives in
New York
New York State financial incentives for Solar Power systems
The New York state offers a set of important financial incentives
to its residents. It includes:
- Cash incentives for the installation of small PV or
solar-electric systems;

- Tax credits;
- Property tax exemptions
Cash incentives available for solar Photovoltaic/PV systems
New York and Long Islands residents might benefit from an
incentive through the Energy Smart Solar Electric System
Incentive Program and the Long Island Clean Energy Initiative.
Customers of Long Island Power Authority are eligible for a
$3.75 per watt incentive (around 40% of the solar system price),
while New York residents can benefit a $4.00 per watt incentive
(which amounts to around 50% of the solar system price).
Management of the Solar Power Systems Incentives
The incentives are managed through the
New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA),
and by
Long Island Clean Energy Initiative.
What types of solar technologies are eligible?
The programs fund only
solar electricity / PV photovoltaic systems connected to
New York and Long Island grids.
New York's
Energy Smart Solar Electric System Incentive Program
and Long Island Clean Energy Initiative do not provide financial incentives for
Solar Hot Water systems.
How apply for New York’s solar power and panels incentives?
Installers recognized by
NYSERDA
are responsible for all paperwork required under the program for
PV solar energy.
Customers shall sign the incentive application form as well as a
customer purchase agreement (prepared by the installer). This
last document outlines total installed costs and provides
detailed costs, expected cash incentives and installation
schedule.
New York State tax credits for solar energy projects
The State of New York offers also a 25% tax credit capped at
$5,000. Depending on the solar system size, you can get back up
to $7,000 of your total expense.
Property Tax Exemption extended through 2011
The State of New York exempts solar electric systems installed
prior to January 1, 2011 from real property tax.
Electric savings
If your solar power system produces more energy than you
consume, the extra electricity is considered as cash credits on
your electric bill.
