Installing storm windows

Storm windows installation depends largely on their design, type and details associated with the manufacturer.

Interior storm windows installation

Storm window installation (interior type)Though interior storm windows installation varies by manufacturer, most are mounted on the inside of window jambs (A, in the image at right, from Croft Manufacturers: see Window Manufacturers) or aligned with the window molding (B, in the image).

Pay attention to the measurements. Mounting the windows in its molding (B/Overlap) involves a slightly higher height and width.

Some interior storm windows are mounted on flat and angled surfaces…

A major general rule, when installing an interior storm window, is to fasten its frame square to the primary window, sealing it tightly to the opening. In most cases the basic steps are very simple: 1) positioning of the window in the opening 2) checking for squareness 3) ensuring a secure attachment with screws or other mean.

Exterior storm windows installation

Exterior storm windows should fit well, and the interlock should be properly and tightly applied at the meeting rail.

Pay also attention to the gasket that seals the glass. The gasket should surround all the edge of the glass, sealing it tightly to the sash.

Prefer storm windows with strong frames (aluminum is a strong material and a very common option). Prefer frames with “weep holes”. These drainage holes (at the bottom of the windows) are the only way to avoid moisture accumulation between the primary window and the storm window. The holes may diminish the energy efficiency of the window, but prevent rot and other problems.

Prefer exterior storm windows with easily removable sashes, and avoid units with too many plastic parts. Most plastics will not withstand extreme conditions.

DIY Installation kits

Most storm window manufacturers offer kits for self-installation, with detailed information of how to install their units.

Storm Windows Installation & ventilation

Storm windows should be easy to move, namely if they haven't detachable glass or acrylic panes for natural ventilation, or other mean to allow it.

Natural ventilation is a feature that should be considered, as well as the ease of maintenance or cleaning.
