Rheem and A. O. Smith - two global leaders in water heating technology - are offering the four main types of water heaters 1) tank-style and 2) tankless gas heaters, 3) solar and 4) electric (hybrids-heat pumps, regular and small electric point-of-use) under their own brands or under third party labels.

Rheem and A. O. Smith

Rheem produces the water heaters sold by Ruud and GE; A.O. Smith sells under their own brands (A. O. Smith, American, Reliance...) but also under third party brands: Kenmore, Maytag, Whirlpool...

Some models are mainly sold to builders and independent retailers and plumbers, but GE, American, Kenmore, Maytag or Whirlpool also sell their water heaters in big improvement stores (GE: Home Depot; Whirlpool and Maytag: Lowe’s; American and Kenmore: Sears…) or online (

Other water heater manufacturers

Other big players in the water heaters market: Bradford White, Bosch and Ariston (point-of-use electric water heaters); Vaillant, Junkers/Bosch and Vulcano/Bosch (in Europe, the last two), Navien, Rinnai or Noritz(tankless water heaters).

Solar water heater manufacturers

Rheem (Cirrex Series), A. O. Smith (SolPak and Solaraid series) and Bradford White (EcoStor) are now also selling solar water heaters.

But many solar heater manufacturers are relatively small companies: SiliconSolar,Fafco, Apricus Solar, Solar Roofs... or newcomers like Velux, the world leader in skylights, and Asian manufacturers.
